Da Nang is about 5 hours 40 minutes direct from Narita. Bali has few direct flight options, so connecting flights often take 7-8 hours. Looking at flight time alone, Da Nang lets you land and still have energy to sightsee that same day.
Comparing hotel costs
Da Nang tends to be cheaper overall. Bali is relatively affordable within Southeast Asia too, but the gap widens fast once you look at luxury villas. Airfare also tends to run higher for Bali, since more connecting flights are involved.

This is a completely different question - not "which country" but "which city within Vietnam." Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City are about 1 hour 20 minutes apart by domestic flight, so plenty of travelers visit both if their schedule allows.
Vibe and who each city suits
Da Nang is often described as the "gentlest" in comparison articles, thanks to its short airport-to-hotel distance and compact layout. That's a big reason it's frequently recommended for first-time travelers and families. Ho Chi Minh City, being larger, suits people who want street food, nightlife, and city energy in full force.
So which one wins?
Honestly, there's no single "this one wins" answer. Pick Bali for a spiritual, non-daily-life escape abroad, and pick Ho Chi Minh City for big-city energy within Vietnam.
But if you're looking for "first Southeast Asia trip," "want to feel at ease," or "don't want travel itself to wear you out," Da Nang comes out ahead in both questions, even on paper. After 5 trips, I think this low-friction quality is exactly why I keep coming back.
